Black holes at accelerators

چکیده

This is my contribution to the proceedings of Stephen Hawking’s 60th birthday celebration. If the ideas of TeV scale gravity are correct, then black holes should be produced at accelerators that probe the TeV scale, and their decays should evidence one of Stephen’s greatest discoveries, the phenomenon of black hole radiance. ∗ email address: [email protected]. Physicists Could Soon Be Creating Black Holes in the Laboratory

M AY 2 0 0 5 Ever since physicists invented particle accelerators, nearly 80 years ago, they have used them for such exotic tasks as splitting atoms, transmuting elements, producing antimatter and creating particles not previously observed in nature. With luck, though, they could soon undertake a challenge that will make those achievements seem almost pedestrian. Accelerators may produce the mo...

If TeV-scale gravity describes nature, black holes will be produced in particle accelerators, perhaps even with impressive rates at the Large Hadron Collider. Their decays, largely via the Hawking process, will be spectacular. Black holes also would be produced in cosmic ray collisions with our atmosphere, and their showers may be observable. Such a scenario means the end of our quest to unders...

Black Holes at Future Colliders and in Cosmic Rays

One of the most dramatic consequences of low-scale (∼ 1 TeV) quantum gravity would be copious production of mini black holes at future accelerators and in ultra-high-energy cosmic ray interactions. Hawking radiation of these black holes is constrained mainly to our (3+1)-dimensional world and results in their rapid evaporation. We review selected topics in the mini-black-hole phenomenology, suc...

Black holes are neither particle accelerators nor dark matter probes.

It has been suggested that maximally spinning black holes can serve as particle accelerators, reaching arbitrarily high center-of-mass energies. Despite several objections regarding the practical achievability of such high energies, and demonstrations past and present that such large energies could never reach a distant observer, interest in this problem has remained substantial. We show that, ...

On brane-world black holes and short scale physics

There is evidence that trans-Planckian physics does not affect the Hawking radiation in four dimensions and, consequently, deviations from the linear dispersion relation (for massless particles) at very high energies cannot be revealed using four-dimensional black holes. We study this issue in the context of models with extra spatial dimensions and show that small black holes that could be prod...
